My quilting hobby has quickly become a passion and mission to help others. I have been a nurse for 24 years and began quilting about 6 years ago. I was initially self-taught by reading a book and did some simple quilts for a few years. That all changed when I went to my first quilting retreat, 2 years ago, here in Liberty, MO. Angela Walters, and the staff at Quilting in My Therapy, ignited a small flame that has quickly turned into a passion. It was so inspirational and up-lifting. Everyone is supportive of each other.

Many of the quilts I make are gifts for family and friends. I like the uniqueness of presenting a quilt as a gift. Quilts celebrate occasions, such as weddings, graduations, and births. They also provide comfort for the sick and memories for loved ones after death. I see many parallels between quilting and nursing. Nursing called me in a direction, and I feel quilting is pulling me in a similar way. Nursing comforts people, and we make people feel good, just like quilting. I remember a coworker’s emotional reaction when she saw the memory quilt made from her father’s favorite T-shirts. There is nothing better than someone giving you a piece of fabric and you returning it as a usable, completely different item. The emotional connection quilts have with people is what makes them such a special gift.

The thing I enjoy most about quilting is the community. I love how quilting has been a source of support and gathering for hundreds of years. I love quilting weekends, retreats, and gatherings. I also enjoy teaching. I recently started doing “painting parties” where people can get together to paint a pre-quilted block that can later be made into a pillow, bag, wall hanging, or other item. One of the best things is you don’t need to be a quilter to participate! This allows non-quilters to get together too. Who knows…maybe we’ll ignite a little quilting flame in an unsuspecting participant!

Thank you for visiting my page! I look forward to getting to know you...and your quilts!
